One of the big benefits of the current down time is the opportunity to learn lots online. While we are still busy treating clients in clinic, as well as running Telehealth consults Australia-wide, we’ve managed to catch up with some great upskilling in the physiotherapy domain also. This is in addition to our weekly staff in-house training sessions (which we now run on Zoom, to minimise contact!).
Tendon Pains
A couple of weeks ago Suzanne, Alyza and Clara listened to a great Q&A with tendon pain expert Jill Cook. There are many different types of tendonopathy (tendon damage, inflammation or pain) in the body, which affect people of varied ages and sports. Gluteal tendinopathy, which creates pain around the hip region, can be more common in middle aged individuals- whereas Achilles tendinopathy may be more common at the present time, as we witness an inflex of people running who may not normally run. Tendon pain is different for everybody and requires a thorough assessment and treatment by your physiotherapist, as well as diligence with your exercises and progression of these at a rate of about 10% load increase every 10 days (depending on reaction to load increase). Some of the key factors we learn from research include: Passive treatments alone aren’t advised, nor are steroid injections (due to risk of tear).
Read Jill’s blog post on tendon pain here. To download our Ebook, ‘The Cycle of the Painful Tendon’, go here.
It’s important in isolation to KEEP ACTIVE- professional organisations such as the Australian Ballet are planning a 3 month intensive training after their isolation periods end, to help prevent against injuries. It’s important that you’re aware of the same and address any pains and niggles quickly. Poor glutes strength is often associated with a number of back and lower limb pains- why not purchase Alyza’s glute strengthening class for just $14.95 here.
Isolation Injuries
Some of the tendon injuries we may see more of during this time include:
Tennis Elbow, Rotator Cuff tendinopathy: Due to increased DIY work, poor home desk set ups and increased lifting.
Achilles Tendinopathy: Due to increased running in people who don’t normally run.
Let us know if you’ve noticed any other tendon pains or unusual aches at this time- we’re here to help!
Tips for Managing Boredom
Here’s some tips from our team on things you may wish to do at home to alleviate boredom- don’t worry, we’re not going to suggest a second language or writing a book! We’d love to hear your tips!
1) Arts online: The Globe, National Theatre, Hampstead Theatre and more have made available recordings of some of their best plays online.
2) Music: There’s a wealth of online live shows each weekend via Facebook, You Tube, Instagram and more. These range from local event, The Kitchen Sessions (find it on Facebook), to larger scale Australian events like Isolaid and Delivered Live.
3) Whiskey/ wine tasting: Local company Three Wolves are hosting an online whiskey tasting, while many vineyards are hosting online wine tastings. Suzanne has ordered a bottle of wine from NSW wineyard Printhie to enjoy with her partner and their accompanying Facebook notes this weekend!
4) Do an online Dance Class. Want to learn hip hop? Sydney Dance Company have put their classes online!
We hope you have a safe and well week!
