TREATING THE PERSON

Our priority is to treat the person, not just the body part. The reason for this is intrinsically linked to a major life event our Director Suzanne Rath experienced in 2013, when she was hit by a car and sustained post-concussion syndrome. While she (fortunately) fully recovered, it left her aware of the need for a multi-modal / multi-disciplinary approach to health. Hence, there were 3 main aims when she founded Wellness Embodied, which are below. You can also read more of Suzanne’s story below.

1. MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM

Create a multi-disciplinary team to enable in-house management of all aspects of health (mind and body), healing and function. We know navigating the health system alone can be difficult and lonely. We aim to remove those barriers through excellence in case management and treatment planning.

2. INNOVATION

Life-long learning and innovation. Continuous exploration of innovative options to assist with inflammation management (a recognised root cause of many of today’s health conditions), injuries and general health. We continue to invest in technology such as Shockwave, Gait Scan custom orthotics and more.

3. ENGAGEMENT

At Wellness Embodied we take engagement seriously, in all aspects. For our clients, our integrated team collaborate to deliver comprehensive treatment plans and values based healthcare. To the wider Cairns and Cooktown communities, we give back with participation, sponsorship and in-kind support.

MORE OF SUZANNE RATH'S STORY

The Accident. Suzanne was cycling home from work in Sydney in 2013, when she was hit by a car. The results were catastrophic. She sustained multiple fractures to her jaw and post-surgery arch bars were applied to splint her teeth together. What followed was two weeks of not being able to talk at all, and seven weeks of smoothies and blended soups etc.

However the following weeks and months – and we’re talking more than 22 months – brought endless fatigue, constant headache, heightened anxiety, difficulty dealing with crowds/ noise, cognitive issues and inability to work in private practice. Ultimately, this resulted in Suzanne leaving Sydney and moving to work in Katherine, the Northern Territory. What she didn’t know at the time, was that these symptoms could be ascribed to a post-concussion syndrome, which went undiagnosed.

Post-Concussion Syndrome.Post-concussion syndrome is a complex thing with symptoms that overlap with a HUGE range of conditions, which include but are not limited to Long Covid, FND, Ehlers Danos, tick borne illnesses and more. What Suzanne needed at the time, was a multi-disciplinary, multi-modal approach to care and recovery. Which was not readily available. Instead, Suzanne had to case manage herself through her post-accident care, seeking out the right people and practitioners – which included a psychologist, good physiotherapists etc – while this was achievable as a health professional herself, it was not desirable and was certainly exhausting.

We don’t believe you should have to do this journey alone. That’s why we have a multi-disciplinary team and our Cairns Complete Concussions trained clinicians include five physiotherapists, an osteopath and occupational therapist Jesse.

THAT'S OUR 'WHY' AT WELLNESS EMBODIED

It was this life defining experience that led Suzanne to have a new approach, when assembling a team for Wellness Embodied. While many people may know this story already, we wanted to capture it on our website, to give you an insight and understanding about our purpose and vision. At Wellness Embodied we are always expanding our team and services, to provide people with access to excellence in Allied Health services, and have recently added two Provisional Psychologists to our team.

Why? Because your mental health is important, and is linked to physical health, friendships, performance at work, social relationships and more. Suzanne is passionate about this whole of person care and has seen psychologists at various points over the years to help manage things that can be overwhelming, including the inability to switch off and anxiety – all of which we often normalise. There is no problem that is too small to warrant a helpful and supportive discussion.

They have great physios, who get to know you as a person, not just your illness. They also do nice little personal touches, like sending you a birthday message or checking in via text to see you're ok after a treatment.
