CAIRNS WOMEN’S HEALTH MANAGEMENT

Cairns women’s health management services are provided by the Allied Health team at Wellness Embodied. We provide personalised treatment plans to assist with rehabilitation from a range of conditions including pregnancy pain, preparation for birth, mastitis and nipple trauma from breastfeeding, incontinence, urgency, prolapse, constipation, pelvic pain and more.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

We support women’s health across the lifespan. A focal point of service and treatment is on pelvic floor problems, which are very common and can occur at any time. Presenting symptoms can include bladder and bowel incontinence and urgency, constipation and straining, and pelvic pain including endometriosis and pain with intercourse. We also treat women experiencing pregnancy pain and/or with postpartum complications. Most conditions can be effectively treated, with a reduction in symptoms in the majority of cases.

YOUR TREATMENT

Our Cairns women’s health services are tailored to your individual needs, and delivered with a focus on optimising overall health, for the mind and body. At your first session, we will discuss your medical history and symptoms and learn how they impact your everyday life. We may ask if we can do an external abdominal and pelvis assessment, with the possibility of an internal examination, but only if you feel comfortable. It does not need to be on the first session. You can decide not to be examined internally at all (more on this below), although it is helpful when investigating pelvic problems.

OUR CARING TEAM

Our caring team of Allied Health professionals includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, an exercise physiologist, naturopath, remedial massage therapists and provisional psychologists. We work collaboratively at various stages throughout your treatment, which enables us to provide a comprehensive Cairns women’s health service that delivers optimum results and outcomes for you. We treat the person not just the body part. We will support you on your journey back to wellness.

Early Intervention Is Best

Cairns women’s health management can be complex, and if you are experiencing any symptoms of pelvic pain or distress, early assessment and treatment is best. Whether you are a young woman experiencing significant period pain, a pregnant and/or postpartum woman, or someone who is considering engaging in crossfit / heavy lifting, which places considerable strain on the pelvic floor, our team can assist with assessment, support, treatment and guidance.

One of our senior Physiotherapists, Leisa Lawson, is very passionate about preventing pelvic floor problems by providing quality treatment in pregnancy, preparing for birth, and early postnatal to assist with recovery, including a Caesarean delivery.

While our senior Exercise Physiologist Kate Jeremy, is passionate about showing women ways in which to improve their lifting technique, to help you do the exercise that you love, without excessive pressures down on your pelvic floor.

Pelvic Floor Examinations

Pelvic floor examinations are an integral part of our Cairns women’s health management services and at Wellness Embodied, we provide external and internal examinations. Why do we recommend an internal vaginal examination when you have pelvic floor dysfunction? It provides us with the ‘bigger’ picture when it comes to what may be causing your pain and symptoms, and therefore helps us to develop the best and most appropriate treatment options for you. It does not have to be on the first session and you can decide not to be examined internally at all.

An examination will often include assessing:

  • any tenderness and tension in the abdomen and pelvis.
  • if any tenderness in the vulva, vaginal wall or pelvic floor muscles (vaginal opening or deeper).
  • if the pelvic floor muscles are contracting AND relaxing well.
  • if the pelvic floor is supporting the bladder well with a cough.
  • the effect on your organs with a “bear down” cue, like you are passing a bowel motion etc.
