CAIRNS REAL TIME ULTRASOUND SERVICES

We provide Cairns real time ultrasound services to assist with our physiotherapy assessments, prognosis and management. This technology allows you to see how your muscles contract and relax whilst performing a movement, activity or exercise. This is a particularly valuable tool for muscle biofeedback, including the pelvic floor and for tendons.

REAL TIME ULTRASOUND

Real time ultrasound can be used for imaging muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints of the body. It is particularly good for deeper muscles, which are hard to palpate on the surface and hard for you to feel. It’s non-invasive, with no known side effects. We use our Cairns real time ultrasound services to support our assessment and management for certain conditions and patients, this includes but is not limited to, people with women’s health and pelvic floor issues, men before and after a radical prostatectomy, with stress urinary incontinence, and sports injury treatment.

PELVIC FLOOR ASSESSMENT

An exciting use of real time ultrasound is for assessment of the pelvic floor muscles. The ultrasound probe, or transducer, is placed either on the abdomen or perineum. The perineum approach gives us much better information. The probe is held externally on the perineum (vulva/labia or under scrotum), not internally. The ‘real time’ aspect means you can see the pelvic floor muscles contract and relax on the screen, and see if you can activate your pelvic floor muscles well before a cough, and relax them well when pretending to open your bowels.

PRE & POST PROSTATECTOMY

It is considered gold standard for men to have pelvic health physiotherapy before and after radical prostatectomy surgery. Real time ultrasound is a valuable tool both before and after the surgery, to assist with assessment, rehabilitation and recovery of pelvic floor muscle function, which is crucial for regaining urinary control and sexual function. Our Cairns real time ultrasound services are non-invasive, making them an ideal choice for people who are not comfortable with internal examinations. We also provide other men’s health services.

How Does It Work

Real time ultrasound works by using high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures inside the body. The transducer (or ultrasound probe) is placed on the skin over the area being examined. It sends out high-frequency sound waves (inaudible to the human ear) that travel through the skin and into the body. These sound waves bounce back at different rates depending on the tissue, to form an image on the screen.

As the transducer moves over the skin, it continuously sends out and receives sound waves, allowing the tissues to be visualised in real-time. This means the physiotherapist can see live images of muscles, tendons and other soft tissues while the patient is moving or performing exercises.

What Are The Benefits

Our Cairns real time ultrasound services are useful for biofeedback, allowing you to see and improve how your muscles contract whilst performing a movement or exercise, and also how they relax. We find patients enjoy being able to see what is happening under their skin, and notice the improvement on the screen with treatment.

The most common tendons assessed on real time ultrasound include patella, achilles, gluteus medius (buttocks/hip) and supraspinatus (shoulder). This technology is helpful to differentiate between tendonosis (wear and tear) and tendonitis (inflammation). This helps guide management and expectations of length of treatment (rehabilitation may take longer).
