MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PHYSIOTHERAPY

Multiple sclerosis can manifest in many ways at different stages of life, reducing mobility, causing pain and affecting quality of life. Our Cairns multiple sclerosis physiotherapists are trained in the assessment and management of multiple sclerosis symptoms. We’ll treat your unique situation and support you to reclaim your independence.

WHAT IS MS?

Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease which affects the central nervous system and its ability to effectively send signals around the body. It appears most commonly in people between the ages of 20 and 40, affecting around three times as many women as it does men. Multiple sclerosis can be responsible for a range of issues, affecting motor control, balance and coordination and causing fatigue, pain and muscle weakness.

ASSESSMENT

Multiple sclerosis causes vastly different symptoms in different people. Our qualified Cairns multiple sclerosis physiotherapists will first complete a comprehensive assessment with you to determine your unique symptoms. Common assessments include balance tests, manual muscle tests, fitness and mobility assessments and questionnaires to determine activity levels, sleep quality and pain levels.

RESULTS & OUTCOMES

After your initial assessment, our Cairns multiple sclerosis physiotherapists analyse your results and compile a personalised treatment plan. Depending on your specific symptoms, we may employ exercise programs to improve strength and overall independence of movement, use our suite of treatment ‘tools’ and provide advice on self-managing specific symptoms.

CAIRNS MS PHYSIO TREATMENT

Multiple sclerosis physiotherapy has been shown to reduce the severity of symptoms, and early intervention can even delay the onset of more serious issues. We know no two patients with multiple sclerosis are the same, the very nature of the condition causes a myriad of health issues and symptoms. Depending on the type and severity of symptoms, our Cairns multiple sclerosis physiotherapists use treatments including:

  • Personalised exercise plans. Exercise can delay onset of severe symptoms, and is safe when tailored to your condition and abilities.
  • Aqua training. Swimming or other forms of water-based exercise can be helpful for those suffering pain or reduced strength.
  • Balance exercises can improve your ability to stand and walk, reducing incidence of falls and increasing independence.

We work closely with carers and other professionals to clearly communicate and coordinate plans to support your treatment regime.
