At Wellness Embodied, we have a fully comprehensive approach to assessing and treating the often underdiagnosed and debilitating condition of Post-Concussion Syndrome. We are an accredited Complete Concussions Clinic, with several practitioners trained in the latest evidence-based concussion management. We will tailor treatment for you, at an initial appointment.

Concussion is a short lived traumatic brain injury, caused by a direct blow to the head or elsewhere on the body with a force transmitted to the head. It typically leads to short lived neurological impairment (including amnesia) which resolves spontaneously. The sufferer may or may not lose consciousness. Early assessment and treatment of concussion by a healthcare practitioner trained in the latest concussion research, is key to preventing or limiting development of post-concussion syndrome. We can help.

Post-Concussion Syndrome defines symptoms lasting for weeks or months after the initial injury. Symptoms can include: headaches, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, loss of concentration and memory, ear ringing, blurred vision, noise and light sensitivity, increased susceptibility to future injury/ recurrence. We have a fully comprehensive approach to assessing and treating the often underdiagnosed and debilitating condition of Post-Concussion Syndrome and have developed our own Cairns Dizziness Clinic.

Our treatment plans for patients diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome may include, but are not limited to the following: vestibular rehabilitation, Watson headache technique, craniosacral therapy and rehabilitation / graded return to work and sport. See below for more information on these treatments. At Wellness Embodied we treat each patient as the individual they are. Treating the whole person, as well as the presenting condition. Call us today to make an appointment on (07) 4231 9777.

Post-Concussion Syndrome

Please note that as above, early assessment and treatment of concussion by a healthcare practitioner drawing on their knowledge of the latest concussion research, is key to preventing or limiting development of post-concussion syndrome. Wellness Embodied can help with baseline testing and/or early concussion approach. See our Cairns Complete Concussions page for more information. When patients are presenting and diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome, our treatment plan may include the following.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation to restore balance and counteract the effects of the traumatic brain injury. Effects may include dizziness, motion sickness and vertigo.
  • Watson Headache Technique specific assessment and treatment of the upper cervical spine, which can often be affected due to the mechanism of injury. Rotation or imbalances at the upper cervical spine can sensitise the trigeminocervical nucleus in the brainstem, leading to many symptoms such as those listed above.

Treatment Plans & Modalities

  • Craniosacral Therapy is a supportive and healing treatment to calm the autonomic nervous system, release tight areas of fascia and improve wellbeing. Studies of American Veterans have shown Craniosacral Therapy has a hugely positive effect on post concussion syndrome and is one of the many treatments we can provide at Wellness Embodied. For more information see our Craniosacral Therapy services page.
  • Exercise Testing. Using science backed exercise tests, we can establish the correct heart rate and intensity for your training and daily activities, allowing optimised blood flow and brain recovery without worsening your symptoms.
  • Rehabilitation. The effects of post concussion syndrome can include poor balance and increased susceptibility to future injuries. Our physiotherapist led Rehab Room sessions are specifically designed for you to perform and progress your rehab exercises under guidance, to ensure you return to the things you love quicker. We also offer an online education program called The Concussion Fix Program.
