PERIMENOPAUSE

Perimenopause is a period of transition leading up to menopause. It typically begins when a woman is in her late 30s to mid-40s and can last several years. During this time oestrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate, which can present as a range of symptoms. These include but are not limited to: joint pain, weight gain, vaginal dryness, bladder control issues, brain fog, mood swings, sleep disturbances, increased blood pressure and susceptibility to chronic inflammation and autoimmune issues. In fact, there are at least 34 recognised symptoms of perimenopause and menopause and some experts identify up to 50.

MENOPAUSE

Menopause marks the end of perimenopause, when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. There are a range of menopause-related musculoskeletal conditions, which are linked to hormonal changes, decreased collagen production, and increased inflammation. These include but are not limited to: frozen shoulder, gluteal tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, plantar fasciopathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, muscle loss and osteoporosis. The symptoms of these vary but include increasing stiffness and pain in various parts of your body, fluid retention, changes in your soft and connective tissues, loss of bone density and increased risk of fractures, especially in the spine, hips and wrists.

Physiotherapy & Exercise Physiology Support

We have a dedicated team to support you. Our experienced women’s health physiotherapist Leisa offers: pelvic floor assessment and strengthening exercises; support for bladder and bowel control; solutions for painful intercourse and vaginal dryness; and real time ultrasound biofeedback to support our assessment and treatment. For body aches and pains, our whole physiotherapy team can assist with: manual therapy; shockwave therapy; gait scan and custom orthotics; dry needling; bone health exercise classes and hydrotherapy.

Additionally, research shows that strength training and aerobic exercise are essential for hormonal balance, bone density and metabolism during perimenopause and menopause. Our compassionate exercise physiologist Kate designs individualised programs to: build muscle mass and prevent osteoporosis; boost energy levels and manage fatigue; improve cardiovascular health and metabolism; reduce stress and cortisol levels. Strength training 2-3 times per week helps to preserve muscle mass and stimulate bone growth.
