PREGNANCY PAIN

Pregnancy pain can manifest at any time during gestation and even after baby has arrived. It can be very uncomfortable and might present as lower back or pelvic girdle pain and sciatica, pubic symphysis pain, aching legs and feet, headaches, carpal tunnel, incontinence, constipation and more. Why does it happen? Mainly because your body is transforming rapidly with hormonal changes and the baby weight causes a shift in your body’s centre of gravity, which can have flow-on effects of strain and pain, particularly if you’ve had injuries before.

NATURAL, MANUAL THERAPY

Our Cairns physiotherapy pregnancy care is natural and gentle. One of our Senior Cairns Physiotherapists, Leisa Lawson, has been focussed on supporting women and their baby, during and post pregnancy since 2007. This includes experience with pelvic health, pelvic pain, mastitis, nipple trauma and scar management. She is passionate about supporting women during pregnancy and incorporates Spinning Babies principles, which is helpful for reducing aches/pains in pregnancy and preparing for birth. She can also support you with Cairns postpartum care and recovery.

FOR MUM & BUB

Here at Wellness Embodied, we aim to support both you and your baby throughout your whole pregnancy journey. In addition to Leisa, several of our Physiotherapists have a special clinical interest in Women’s Health and pregnancy related pain. Our natural, manual healthcare, including Cairns physiotherapy pregnancy treatments, are effective and gentle, suitable for Mums to be at all stages of their pregnancy and of course, safe for baby. We can also provide advice on suitable exercise programs and lifestyle choices to support you at this time (see below).

EXERCISE THERAPY DURING PREGNANCY

Exercise during pregnancy is something that is important, to maintain your own strength but also to help support your body as it changes over the course of time. Some women are unsure of the best and safest course of action for them, that’s where Wellness Embodied can help.

Our Exercise Physiologist Kate Jeremy is also a Mum to a young family, so she is personally and professionally experienced to support you and baby with appropriate exercise therapy and advice. Kate can provide assessment, education and tailored exercise programs, suitable during pregnancy and post-partum.

We also offer Physiotherapist-led Clinical Pilates (Reformer / Equipment) classes, with exercises tailored specifically to your needs and Rehab Classes led by our Physiotherapists and/or Exercise Physiologist.

PREPARING FOR BIRTH

We can support you and your body, as you progress through your pregnancy. If you are experiencing lower back pain / pelvic joint pain (now or in the past), we suggest having an initial assessment at around 20-25 weeks gestation, with a follow up assessment from 30-34 weeks.

This allows us to tailor some specific prep for birth exercises for you. We can also teach you perineal massage and assist with relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles, if needed. Perineal massage and Pelvic floor muscle exercises that are performed well, can significantly reduce the risk of a major perineal tear and improve postnatal recovery post birth.

If you are planning for a Caesarean delivery – it can still be helpful to know what will help to reduce your abdominal discomfort in the early postnatal period.
