CAIRNS OSTEOPOROSIS EXERCISE PROGRAM - BONE HEALTH

A bone health exercise program is now available at Wellness Embodied for people living with osteoporosis or osteopenia in Cairns, delivered on-site by our physiotherapists or exercise physiologists. Research has shown that specific types of exercise are effective in improving bone health and minimising the risk of osteoporotic fractures. If you have been diagnosed with or are at risk of osteoporosis or osteopenia, we can help you improve your bone health and overall wellbeing.

OSTEOPOROSIS

Osteoporosis is a disease which reduces bone density, leaving bones brittle and susceptible to fracture under high-impact incidents such as falls. Hips, wrists and the spine are the common areas where osteoporosis occurs, with sufferers often experiencing serious consequences after a fall. Over half of the Australians aged 50 or above have osteoporosis or osteopenia (bone weakness), and poor bone health contribute to more than 173,000 fractures annually. Our bone health exercise program can help.

TREATMENTS

Maintaining healthy bones is essential to combat osteoporosis and osteopenia. Bone health exercises utilise weight bearing exercise to stimulate bone development, improve bone health and reduce the risk of bone density loss. In addition, at Wellness Embodied, nutrition advice can also be provided by our degree-qualified naturopath – including calcium and vitamin D intake strategies – to keep your bones strong.

BONE HEALTH EXERCISE

Our bone health exercise program utilizes different high-intensity weight-bearing exercises and impact exercises to improve bone and muscle strength. It is led by our physiotherapists or exercise physiologists, who can provide advice and feedback with your exercise techniques to ensure maximum effect and safety. We also practice different balance exercises to maximise your balance and minimise your risk of falling, and obtaining fractures.

BONE HEALTH EXERCISE PROGRAM

Our bone health exercise sessions are led by our physiotherapists and exercise physiologists, at our Wellness Embodied Scott Street practice gym. To ensure sufficient supervision, only a maximum of four (4) participants is allowed in each session. The program uses a mix of:

  • Resistance training to build muscle strength, using weights machines and dumbbells.
  • Impact training for bone strength, including jumping and hopping exercises.
  • Mobility exercises for shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, using weights.
  • Balance exercises of increasing difficulty to reduce your risk of falling.

SAFE & PERSONALISED TREATMENTS

Don’t be deterred by terms such as ‘high intensity’ and ‘impact’: research studies tell us that high intensity training is safe for people with poor bone health! The bone health exercise program at Wellness Embodied is fully supervised by our friendly and professional physiotherapists/exercise physiologists on-site, ensuring correct, safe form and minimal risk of injury.

Here at Wellness Embodied, we are committed to providing holistic care to our clients, supporting our bone health exercise program with diet and nutrition advice, individualised physiotherapy, exercise physiology and naturopathy sessions as required.
