CONCUSSION

Concussion is a short lived traumatic brain injury, caused by a direct blow to the head or elsewhere on the body with a force transmitted to the head. It typically leads to short lived neurological impairment (including amnesia) which resolves spontaneously. The sufferer may or may not lose consciousness. Concussion symptoms should improve rapidly within 2 weeks. Concussion is a widely studied diagnosis in the sports medical world currently, with guidelines consistently being updated.

POST-CONCUSSION SYNDROME

Post-Concussion Syndrome defines symptoms lasting for weeks or months after the initial injury. Symptoms can include: headaches, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, loss of concentration and memory, ear ringing, blurred vision, noise and light sensitivity, increased susceptibility to future injury/ recurrence. We have a fully comprehensive approach to assessing and treating the often underdiagnosed and debilitating condition of Post-Concussion Syndrome. We develop personalised treatment plans.

OUR TREATMENT

Our treatment plans for patients diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome may include, but are not limited to the following: vestibular rehabilitation, Watson headache technique, craniosacral therapy and rehabilitation. More information on each of these treatments, are explained below. At Wellness Embodied we treat each patient as the individual they are. Treating the whole person, as well as the presenting condition. Call us today to make an appointment on (07) 4231 9777.

Post-Concussion Syndrome

Our treatment plan for patients presenting and diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome may include the following.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation to restore balance and counteract the effects of the traumatic brain injury.
  • Watson Headache Technique specific assessment and treatment of the upper cervical spine, which can often be affected due to the mechanism of injury. Rotation or imbalances at the upper cervical spine can sensitise the trigeminocervical nucleus in the brainstem, leading to many symptoms such as those listed above.

Treatment Plans & Modalities

  • Craniosacral Therapy a supportive and healing treatment to calm the autonomic nervous system, release tight areas of fascia and improve wellbeing. Studies of American Veterans have shown Craniosacral Therapy has a hugely positive effect on post concussion syndrome and is something we specialise in at Wellness Embodied. For more information see our Craniosacral Therapy services page.
  • Rehabilitation. The effects of post concussion syndrome can include poor balance and increased susceptibility to future injuries. Our physiotherapist led Rehab Room sessions are specifically designed for you to perform and progress your rehab exercises under guidance, to ensure you return to the things you love quicker.
