RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. Light physical activity each day in the first 5 days, provided it:

–Does not exacerbate symptoms

–Does not put you at risk for hitting your head

2. Light cognitive activity for the first 2-3 days:

-Screens ok, cognitive activity ok

-Do whatever doesn’t provoke your symptoms too much and DO NOT do anything which places you at risk of hitting your head

3. Driving protocol:

DO NOT DRIVE FOR THE FIRST 48 HS

  • Stage 1–Riding in a car as a passenger. If your symptoms do not increase for 24 hours, you can move to stage 2
  • Stage 2–Driving around neighbourhood with a passenger. If your symptoms do not increase after 24 hours, you can move to stage 3
  • Stage 3–Driving on highways with a passenger. If your symptoms do not increase after 24 hours, you can move to stage 4.
  • Stage 4–Driving around neighbourhood alone. If your symptoms do not increase after 24 hours, you can move to stage 5.
  • Stage 5–Full Driving alone

What to do if your symptoms increase? Go back to the previous stage 🙂

4. Maintain your neck movement:

Physiotherapy can help you to maintain your muscles and joint in optimal functioning to avoid persistent symptoms or headaches.

5. Anti inflammatory diet:

Please find the attached document with the Brain Recovery Diet and the addendum written by our Cairns Physiotherapist and Naturopath Catherine Lipsett-Moore. It includes very important information and a sample of a daily Brain Recovery Diet Plan!

Avoiding long lasting inflammation can help to prevent chronic symptoms!

6. Heart Rate:

After a concussion, your heart rate can suffer certain variabilities. This can affect your ability to think, concentrate, process information and even see clearly!

How do we avoid this? Easy! You just need to:

-Follow your Brain Recovery Diet

-Do some light and symptom free exercise

-Do some breathing exercises (please follow the link for Breathing Exercise guidance)

7. Sleep Hygiene:

A concussion can alter the way you sleep. Some patients have difficulties falling asleep, some others sleep too much. We have attached a document with very interesting and useful information to avoid this from happening to you!
