PHYSIOTHERAPY & AUTISM

Research shows that children and young people on the autism spectrum, are at risk of low levels of physical activity, and high levels of sedentary behaviours. This puts them at risk of diseases associated with inactivity, as well as limits their opportunities for social engagement. That’s why our Cairns autism management approach, specifically addresses movement and function.

OUR APPROACH

Our approach to Cairns autism management is to assess each client as being unique, and tailor individualised treatment plans, to deliver best outcomes for their specific needs. Our plans are designed to improve overall levels of physical activity, as well as to promote early identification of movement difficulties, facilitating early access to specialised interventions and promoting better outcomes for patients with autism.

YOUR TREATMENT

We strongly value hands on therapies as a part of our Cairns autism management plans, to help relieve pain and management of sensory issues. Our team of allied health professionals are experienced at a range of modalities and will select the best ones, to maximise your Cairns autism management. These may include, but are not limited to, craniosacral therapy, osteopathic techniques or remedial massage.

WHAT IS AUTISM?

Autism is a condition that affects how a person thinks, feels and interacts with others, and experiences their environment. It’s a lifelong disability that starts when a person is born and stays with them into old age. Every person with autism is different to the other. This is why autism is described as a ‘spectrum’. Some of the frequent symptoms may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lack of social or emotional exchanges like pointing, smiling and showing you things.
  • Lack of non-verbal communication, such as nodding and shaking head, using hand gestures etc.
  • Difficulty developing and maintaining relationships appropriate to the age, such as peer play, lack of close friends.
  • Strongly reactive to sensory input such as sound, pain or textures.

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENTS

To develop an appropriate Cairns autism management plan for each client, we complete a range of assessments. This includes a BOT-2 assessment, which provides the tools to benchmark a child’s fundamental motor skills, such as balancing, running, strength and agility, and is suitable for those aged 4-21.

Accurate assessments and comprehensive reporting can help NDIS clients receive appropriate funding, to support their treatment and care. If you, or your child has issues with mobility, or performing day to day physical functional tasks, we can perform a Functional Capacity Assessment in clinic or at your home, to assist you with a report on your current state and guide you in future goal setting.

Our assessments are offered in addition and to complement our Cairns autism management support and treatment.
