WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. It affects the whole joint including cartilage, bone, muscles and ligaments. In most cases, there is no identifiable cause for knee or hip OA but increasing age, joint abnormalities and excessive joint loading can increase the risk of OA. OA is influenced by different factors such as family history, obesity, diabetes, lower limb alignment, joint shape, trauma and inflammation by metabolic syndromes. OA usually develops slowly. In younger people, it can develop due to previous trauma.

OSTEOARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis include, but are not limited to:

  • hip or knee pain
  • joint stiffness
  • joint swelling
  • joint deformity
  • grinding or crunching sensation (crepitus)
  • functional limitations
